The Ice Cream “Socials” in both Columbus and Wooster were successes. Dr. Moser, Dr. Newcomb and Dr. Slack were in attendance on Wednesday, August 24th, at the Columbus site, handing out drumsticks to staff members. Other members reported their views of the distribution on both campuses. Overall, staff were appreciative. Members are agreement this will be an annual event to market SAC during Staff Appreciation week.

Reports from the Staff Appreciation Day:

The Ice Cream “Socials” in both Columbus and Wooster were successes.  Dr. Moser, Dr. Newcomb and Dr. Slack were in attendance on Wednesday, August 24th, at the Columbus site, handing out drumsticks to staff members.  Other members reported their views of the distribution on both campuses.  Overall, staff were appreciative.  Members are agreement this will be an annual event to market SAC during Staff Appreciation week.

The Wooster group reported it strengthened our partnership with OARDC Staff Council and that it will continue to be an annual event as well with OARDC.

Anita shared the comments received from the Regional Offices on the cookie distribution.  Solicited feedback it was good effort in recognizing Extension staff in the outlying areas.  It was noted that getting the cookies two-three weeks prior to Staff Appreciation Week to the Regional Offices would result in a timely for delivery to the staff.  The cookies reached the offices one week prior to the event this year.

COMMITTEE UPDATES

Development Fund - Jim Lawrence

Jim reported that he has talked to Marie Gibbons, Development.  Jim has developed a model and will schedule a meeting with Dr. Newcomb regarding status of the initiative and matching funds.  The name of the fund, which will need approval, is “The College of FAES Staff Advisory Council Professional Development Matching Fund”.  Jim circulated the form needed for review. The criteria and application process is still being worked out. The key is to keep it general. The monies will be for staff in the College of FAES, being awarded one per quarter with the exception of Summer quarter.  SAC will need to develop marketing plans to promote the fund.

Survey - Megan Strother

Megan shared her email communication with Tom Archer-Zoomerang guru. Tom is willing to help SAC put together a short, on-line survey. He suggests leaving the survey open for 10 working days, with two reminders.  SAC will need to generate a one sentence objective. Tom suggested putting up a pilot questionnaire.  We can pilot as many times as we like until we get it right. The group needs to think about questions they want answered and build the “bones” of the survey. The Survey Task Force formed.  Its members are Megan Strother, chair, Tim Butcher and Karen Fedevich.

Shirley Brooks-Jones Award - Mary Jo Williams

Mary Jo announced that there are 16 nominees for the SBJ award compared to the 9 nominations last year.  The committee members include: Melissa Heiselt, Extension, Pat Patterson, former Chair, SAC; Kris Purdy, ATI, Julie Townsend, 2004 recipient, and Mary Jo Williams, SAC representative.  They are scheduled to meet later this month to choose a recipient who will be announced at SAC’s  annual luncheon in October.

New Committee - Mentoring Program

Anita has asked Marjorie Dellinger and Todd Hicks, volunteered to help, to create a mentoring tool for SAC.

Orientation to SAC

Dana Oleskiewicz, Chair 2003-2004, presented a short quiz to see how much we know about the College. Dana awarded the top 3 quiz scores.  We all came away winners, learning more about the College we serve. Dana even stumped some of the original members.  Dana presented a PowerPoint over of Staff Advisory Council.  It was a good refresher and introductory for everyone and helped set the pace for the retreat.

Celebrating Change: Beth Flynn, Program Specialist with the OSU Leadership Center, was the guest facilitator of our retreat “Celebrating Change.”   After providing us with her background, Beth led the group in discussion on stages of team development and developing personal contacts.  The group was divided into three sub-committee groups: Marketing, Development and Survey for the day. Working on each charge, the individual groups brainstormed, strategized, developed and planned for next year.  A separate document summarizing in detail will be prepared and distributed to members prior to the SAC’s annual meeting in October.

Election of 2005-2006 Officers

Dave Grum, SAC Vice-Chair and chair of the nominating committee presented the following slate of officers and there being no nominations from the floor the following were unanimously elected by ballot vote:

Vice Chair: Todd Hicks

Secretary Treasurer: Janis Cripe

Communication Director: Dave Sammons

CONGRATULATIONS to the new Executive Committee!

Update Vice President’s Advisory Council

Todd Hicks reported that they have put together a 25 year plan.  Members of the group are all aspects of agriculture, cooperative groups, industry, college, etc.  Agriculture is more than just farming and is involved in science.  Leaders need to branch out and be on the boards (e.g. Farm Bureau, etc.) to bridge the gap.  Due to Laura Spadaro’s resignation, Dave Sammons will serving the remainder of her term on the Vice President’s Advisory Council.

OARDC Staff Council

Megan Strother will represent SAC at the OARDC Staff Council Annual meeting on September 28.
