Minutes of the CFAES Staff Advisory Council Meeting
July 17, 2008
10:00 p.m.
Meeting held at the Athens County Extension Office in Athens and hosted by Matt Davis and Cindy Buxton.
Present: David Drake, Mary Roberts, Cindy Buxton, Todd Hicks, April Wax, Mike Kauffman, Mary Gulas, Trina Beebe, Matt Davis, Jeanne Osborne, Pat Patterson, Liz Kinney, Ernie Shannon, John Beardmore, Sarah Elvey, and Frances Whited
I. Welcome and Introduction
An opener for the meeting was everyone told of their favorite field day trip as a kid. Matt explained that Athens County contains a lot of small, specialty organic farms. He also informed us that approximately 1/3 of the population is students.
Dave introduced Frances who introduced Sarah Elvey from ATI who is filling the term for Rachael Ramsier.
II. Approval of Minutes
Frances moved to approve the minutes, second by Mike. Minutes were approved unanimously.
III. Old Business — Task Force Reports:
Budget (April)
April reported the Budget Committee received a letter from Dr. Martin indicating approval of $20,000 for a budget. Cindy will send a thank you card to Dr. Martin and to Dr. Moser and the VP’s Cabinet after the Executive Team meets with Dr. Martin on July 23rd.
The question of whether the $20,000 will roll-over if not all spent during the fiscal year was raised. Cindy suggested maybe any roll-over could be moved into the development fund.
Staff Appreciation (Teresa call in)
SAC is planning to have the Staff Appreciation on Thursday, Aug. 21. Teresa and April are working on this. The plans include popsicles and drumsticks, corn hole games, a popcorn machine, and having the Wellness group onsite. Todd and Tim will handle contacting Wellness. April reported that Coke is donating 360 Coke products.
The suggestion was made to have the band, Loosely Strung, play if gas for the musicians can be secured. In case of rain, outside activities can move under the Kottman Hall overhang.
There was a discussion on how to honor Extension staff. One option was to recognize staff at the 2 Extension staff conferences (in Oct. and Dec). A special announcement acknowledging staff be sent during Staff Appreciation week letting them know they will receive an acknowledgement at the conferences. The other option was to stick to mailing out cookies to the offices during Staff Appreciation week. This is now an item to discuss with Dr. Martin.
A suggestion was made that Dr. Moser make a video inviting staff to the Appreciation Day activities. More probable will be an email being sent to all staff.
Drawings for gift certificates will be at both the Columbus & Wooster locations. Teresa will handle getting the various certificates.
Council had lunch provided by Athens County Extension, Matt Davis.
Wellness (Mary)
Mary congratulated and thanked Tim on the CPR class he taught. They had a very good turn out. The blood drive had 17 donors.
Vice President’s Council (Todd)
Todd indicated the Strategic Plan is being pushed as a business modeled as opposed to an academic model. There was a lot of discussion as several changes in the College are anticipated.
Shirley Brooks Jones (no report)
April requested people give her names of non-SAC members to be on the committee that reviews the nominations.
Elections (Jeanne)
Jeanne will send out an email soliciting nominations for officers.
Day with the Dean (no report) – will be discussed during meeting with Dr. Martin

The next meeting will be hosted by the Executive Committee on Thursday, Sept. 4th.
